Project Description

Both parts of the Portland, Maine metropolitan statistical area, the Town of Topsham in Sagadahoc County and the Town of Brunswick in Cumberland County, needed a reliable and durable water storage tank that could endure months of heavy snow. The Brunswick & Topsham Water District hired Wright-Pierce, Portland, ME to lead this project. After researching available alternatives, the project team determined an AWWA D110 Type III wire-wound prestressed concrete water storage tank would be the optimal solution because of its proven cold climate performance and low maintenance requirements. Preload was the successful bidder and was awarded the contract to build the tank.

Built in 2005, this Preload tank’s capacity is 4.0 MG, with an inside diameter of 120’ 9” and a side water depth of 46’ 2 3/8”. The tank features a caged exterior ladder and a dome roof. The durable dome roof, with its uniform compression throughout the dome shell, is designed to handle Maine’s heavy snows with ease.
