Project Overview

Manchester by the Sea, MA

This Cape Ann community, just 20 miles north of Boston, is a residential town wrapped around one of New England’s most picturesque harbors. Visitors are attracted to Manchester by-the-Sea’s beautiful beaches, quaint shops, fine dining, and historic buildings. In 1998, the town needed to replace an aging cast-in-place concrete standpipe water tank.

The Town of Manchester-by-the-Sea hired AECOM (formerly Earth Tech, Concord, NH) to design a similar standpipe-style tank with more up-to-date specifications and to build the tank in the same location. In addition, the tank needed to withstand the harsh, salty air from the Atlantic Ocean. After researching available options, the consulting engineers specified an AWWA D110 Type III prestressed concrete tank because of its inherent ability to tolerate a near-ocean environment without the need for costly routine maintenance. Preload, with more than 80 years of experience designing and constructing prestressed concrete tanks, was selected as the preferred tank builder.

This Preload AWWA D110 Type III wire-wound prestressed tank holds up to 1.7 MG of water. With a side water depth of 78’, the standpipe tank towers above the Atlantic Ocean. A stately landmark on a promontory close to the shore, this Preload prestressed concrete standpipe also serves as a navigational beacon.
