City of Fort Worth, Texas - Five Million Gallon Water Storage Tank
The City of Fort Worth, Texas, is the 16th largest city in the United States and fifth-largest in the state of Texas. It is one of the fastest growing cities according to a recent article in Forbes magazine and home to the historic stock yards, multiple multinational corporations and a school which prides themselves as the TCU Horned Frogs. With so many positive attributes, the city’s growth rate resulted in the need for additional water storage.
In July of 2013, the city awarded Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. with a consulting agreement to design a five million gallon water storage tank. An additional award for the design of an overflow for the tank and site storm drainage was added to the project and competitive bids were received in December of 2014. North Texas Contracting, Inc. of Keller, TX, was awarded the construction contract and selected Preload as their prestressed concrete tank builder.
The new 5.0 MG Prestressed Concrete Tank is an AWWA D110 Type III tank with an Inside Diameter of 122’ – 0” and Side Water Depth of 58’ – 0” with a cast-in-place dome. There were 38 precast panels required for this tank which were over 60’ tall and weighed just over 32 tons each requiring a 600 ton crane with an assist crane. Preload installed approximately 1,200,000 linear feet of prestressing wire on the tank structure to impart compression into the tank wall. The tank is located on a hill and serves as an elevated tank with one 30” inlet/outlet and 12” drain on a sloped slab.
Preload is proud to be part of the City of Fort Worth’s investment into expanding their storage infrastructure.
