Project Overview

Nestled along the meandering path of the St. Joseph River, Mishawaka is a growing city in Northern Indiana. Located next to South Bend, Mishawaka, also known as the “Princess City,” is home to many parks, recreational facilities, and residential subdivisions. The hometown feel of the city has attracted more residents and businesses to this community, resulting in a need for additional water storage for the area. To accommodate this growth, the City of Mishawaka hired consulting engineer Arcadis (formerly Malcolm Pirnie). After researching available alternatives, the project team determined that an AWWA D110 Type III wire-wound prestressed concrete water storage tank would be the optimal solution because of its inherent long life span, durability, and negligible need for maintenance.

Preload, selected as the preferred tank firm, designed and constructed a prestressed concrete tank with a side water depth of 14’ and an inside diameter of 123’6”. Built in 2001, this low-profile reservoir holds 1.25 MG of water includes a free-span concrete dome roof with an accented dome ring. Preload’s free-span concrete dome roofs are designed to support the heavy snow loads sometimes experienced in this region of the country.
